  • Never assume that everyone you see that may slightly resemble "Asian" is Chinese.
  • Asia is the largest continent in the world
    • Asia - 17,139,445 square miles
    • Asia - 4,055,000,000 (Over 4 billion)population
  • Just because you are not able to tell the difference, does not mean they can not...THEY CAN!
  • Remember, WE ALL LOOK ALIKE! A person who is not familiar with the American culture would easily mistake you for someone else.
  • If you do not know about a particular culture, that is more than okay, however, do not come across as all knowing to someone who is different than you.
  • We all have struggles that are different...YOU CAN NEVER UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLES OF ANOTHER ETHNICITY, REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH YOU READ OR STUDY...
  • Many Americans think this mistake is no big deal. They are prone to brush it off....BUT...
How would you like it if you were identified as one culture and people were not respectful enough to care that there is a difference???????

This is exactly what could go wrong
when we choose not to respect cultural differences:

ALL ASIANS IN AMERICA ARE FOREIGN?

FALSE!
FALSE!
FALSE!

  • Americans only see in black and white. There are so many race wars that happen between black Americans and white Americans, it should not be a surprise that many Asian stereotypes are not being address.
  • The average U.S. citizen will look at someone of Asian descent and assume they are foreign to our country.
  • It is important to recognize that while we have many foreigners....NOT ALL ASIANS FIT IN THAT CATEGORY.
  • Many Asians are born in and raised in America, and this is their home.
  • U.S. residents of Asian descent, makes up approximately 6 percent of the nation’s population.
    • Asian or Asian plus make up a total of 17.6 million.
  • A person can identify themselves as an American citizen  if they have been born on U.S. soil or born to a U.S. citizen.

Learn about U.S. Citizenship Through Parents or by Birth:

WHY THIS IS HURTFUL:
  • Imagine being born to a country and becoming an automatic outcast simply because you were not born black or white.
  • What would you do if every time you walked outside, the people you meet start speaking very slow because they assume that you do not understand English....BECAUSE YOU ARE A FOREIGNER.
  • How would you feel if you went to school and all of the children ostracized you because you were that Asian kid.
FACT:

Not all Asians in America are foreign!
Many are more American than you!

# 2.
ALL ASIANS KNOW KUNG FU, KARATE, OR BOTH!

FALSE!
FALSE!
FALSE!
  • kung fu
    • Any of various Chinese martial arts, especially those forms in which sharp blows and kicks are applied to pressure points on the body of an opponent.
  • ka·ra·te
    • A Japanese art of self-defense in which sharp blows and kicks are administered to pressure-sensitive points on the body of an opponent.
  • Kung Fu is a Chinese martial arts...IT IS NOT PRACTICE BY EVERY ASIAN!
  • These stereotypes have exploded with famous movies like "the karate kid" or "kung fu panda."

WHY THIS HURTS:
  • Asians enjoy more that Karate and Kung Fu. They have similar interests and desires that Americans do not recognize because they fail to learn and quickly jump to the wrong conclusion.
  • This can be another form of exclusion from the activities that your Asian friend may enjoy.
  • Making statements like this, indicates that you are too focused on a person's race and culture.

  • There is no denying the fact that Americans have a high tendency to degrade anyone who does not resemble the stereotypical American.
  • Many people have ridiculed the eyes of Asians...which are beautiful.
    • The same things that stand out about each culture, is what makes them beautiful.
  • Some (not all) Asians will get surgery to widen their eyes. Since I am not Asian, I can not tell you specifically why certain people of the Asian culture will have this procedure done. It is also not my place to guess....
  • East Asian blepharoplasty eye surgery:
    • Asian blepharoplasty, also known as "double eyelid surgery," or colloquially "the surgery" is a type of cosmetic surgery where the skin around the eye is reshaped (blepharoplasty). The purpose of the procedure is to create an upper eyelid with a crease..

  • America needs to recognize that their are now MANY different faces of beauty and talent. The pressure to look like the modern day American is not only influencing blacks and hispanics, but it is also taking a cruel toll on anyone who does not fit "The typical American Beauty."
