How do I know if I have low Self- Esteem?

If you are actually pondering this question, the answer is "yes." A person with self-esteem will automatically know that  certain feelings should not  coincide with their everyday belief. We are all human beings, and everyone at one point,  has thought the previous statements, but  a person with a positive self-image is able to turn these thoughts off and get back in the game.

Why do I have hate myself?

Suffering from personal perception issue can be detrimental (as mentioned earlier). There are several factors that could be the cause of your self -worth or "image" problems:
  • Being constantly criticized  as a child. Usually a  parent to a child.
    • This is a  dangerous situation to be in. If you are a child currently living with a parent who is abusive (emotional or physical), this should be handled immediately.

  • Comparing your life with your friends/family. "Competition"
  • Mental illness, such as Anorexia, Depression and Bipolar Disorder.

Perception is said to be reality. This is only partially true. People see us in the light that we choose to expose. A person with a negative self-image, will automatically display the bad qualities and they are usually completely oblivious that they are doing this. Rarely is the perception of a human being "completely" accurate, but for an individual to ignore personal  responsibility for some of their perceived behaviour, can lead towards an "unhealthy" life and negative self-image.

Am I a bad person
 if I have a low self-image?

No. we all have our weaknesses in life. Many people suffer from low self-esteem  at some point in our lives. Society puts immense pressure on us to hide our true feelings and create self-hatred. The media chooses to define beauty and perfection one way, and you may not fit their standard of beauty. This form of self-hatred can be social. But, there is hope!

"With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God (Mark 10:27)."

If you want to change, you can. However, change is a process. It takes time, energy and support. Work on changing your outlook on life and NEVER attempt to change another person.

HOW TO IMPROVE SELF-ESTEEM!

This article was written in an effort for a person to understand self-image and its importance. If you are not suffering from this problem, this is a great opportunity for you to learn how to deal with a loved one who is a victim of this "illness." If this is not acknowledged, you will eventually fall victim to losing a family member and emotional support. Do not expect ANY relationship to be sustainable with any individual who has a low self-image. If a person cannot love themselves, then they are incapable of treating any one right, this includes you! If you are taking this from a spiritual stand point then it was instructed that we as human beings should love our neighbors as our self. How is it possible for someone to love you if they have not learned the greatest Commandment?

According to a biblical stand point...it is not possible.

The Greatest Commandment!
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments (Matthew 22:35-40).”

Before you choose to develop an intimate relationship with someone who has low self-esteem, these are things that you should understand. However, below are several ways a person can improve how they feel about themselves.
  • Tell yourself you are beautiful.
  • Stay away from people who are negative.
  • Stop comparing you life with others.
  • Treat yourself to a special dinner and shopping.
  • Exercise at least 3 times a week.
  • Surround yourself with positive people!
  • Replace the negative thoughts with  positive ones.
  • Make a list about what is fantastic about yourself. Keep it in your pocket. Whenever you feel discouraged, take a peek!
  • DO NOT FOCUS ON THE ONE BAD THING A PERSON SAID TO YOU!
  • Anyone who deliberately tries to hurt another human being, probably lacks in this area as well.
  • Set realistic goals.

RECOGNIZE...
NO ONE IS PERFECT!

"As it is written: "There is no one righteous,
not even one (Romans 3:10)."

SIDE NOTE: If you are trying to help a loved one through this difficult time, these are also some steps you can take to encourage positive behaviour.

These are just a few areas to start with. Forming a positive self-image is a life-long journey. Never get discouraged. Sometimes it takes a life time of healing to overcome the terrible obstacles that have how we feel about ourselves. Get the help you need. You are not alone
