But your busy schedule may not leave you as much time as you’d like to give yourself the care you need and deserve. Fortunately, you don’t truly need long stretches of free time to look after yourself — you can do it in short, powerful bursts, whilst you follow your everyday routine. BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT! AND THE WARNINGS....

The Brazilian blowout is another method used to give a person straight and silky hair. This technique was designed to eliminate frizz, and leave your hair with a shiny healthy glow. This method is a temporary solution (lasting about 3 months) that is done by using a substance called keratin and sealing it with a flat iron. Other names include, Brazilian Keratin Treatment, BKT, Brazilian Blowout, Escova Progressiva, Keratin Cure or Keratin Straightening.

The price range is anywhere from $150-$600 depending on the hairstylist, location and length of hair. This treatment can generally be used on all types of hair, even hair that has been previously chemically treated. The client who receives a Brazilian blowout is expected to wait at least 72 hours before the hair is washed or even pulled back into a ponytail. There is no guarantee that this treatment will completely get rid of all of the frizz, however, many people have been said that it has reduced their frizziness from 50% to 80%. Unlike the Japanese straightener, the Brazilian blowout primarily prevents frizz while allowing the hair to wave, curl or become stick-straight. Japanese hair straightening results to stick-straight locks and lasts much longer. Originally, this treatment was created for Latinas, however, anyone can be a candidate for this type of treatment.

RISKS AND CONCERNS:

At this point, the Brazilian blowout has become extremely controversial. There are many lawsuits that have developed from the use of this substance. The Brazilian blowout contains a substance called  formaldehyde. It  is a colorless gas compound that can irritate eyes, mucous membranes and the upper respiratory system.  Formaldehyde has been known to mostly affect hairstylists because they are constantly exposed to it at work. This ingredient is known to  cause cancer and illness, even towards the clients.

"Formaldehyde, commonly found in a number of 'Brazilian style' keratin-based hair straighteners, is extremely dangerous and a known carcinogen," the FDA says.

Brazilian Blowout,  agreed to pay $600,000 in fees and penalties in which they  agreed to warn consumers that its product contains dangerous  formaldehyde gas. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Hazard Administration) has issued citations  for failing to communicate the hazards of exposure to formaldehyde. Currently, the Brazilian Blowout has been banned from Canada and the European Union, due to the amount of chemicals that were found.
